Encouraging performances continue!!

The weather may be cold, but the MTR athletes' performances have been anything but. Recently, at the Lysterfield 7 hour MTB event, MTR's Jason Quigley and Rod Stormonth endured the elements to come away with encouraging results. The wet and muddy conditions were no hindrance for Quigley, pedaling out a fantastic 3rd place overall finish, with an 8 lap, 7 hour 27 minute performance. Stormonth also put in a commendable 7 lap, 6 hour 48 minute ride for 3rd place in his category. Whilst not surprising to others in the MTR crew, results may have raised eyebrows as both riders failed to stay up right and crashed during the 7 hour marathon. Both riders were happy with their result, although there is bigger fish to fry with Quigley and Stormonth both in heavy preparation for an upcoming 24 hour MTB event.

Meanwhile in sunny Queensland, 26 degree perfect weather greeted Ben Robinson, Carla Lawson and Xavier Coppock as they took part in the Yeppoon half Ironman triathlon. Robinson endured a 5 hour performance, made all the more impressive after losing his nutrition on the notoriously rough course. In the female 30-34 age group, Carla Lawson put in an encouraging 4th place, 5 hour 8 minute performance in preparation for her second attempt at the Kona, Hawaiian Ironman. However all these performances were overshadowed by a more than encouraging start to the season for Xavier Coppock. The 4 hour 27 minute effort was a personal best on this course and was good enough for 23rd overall and 2nd in his age group. A promising sign as he seeks to achieve his ultimate goal of qualifying for Kona.
We look forward to more promising future results.

MTR racing. Beautiful one day, perfect the next.

Rod braves the Storm and takes the win!!

Both Jason & Rod made the journey to Ballarat to compete in the InterWinter Series Round 2, a 3 hour enduro in terrible conditions due to the weather.

Rod, in his first season of MTB racing, braved the terrible conditions (and had to borrow an undershirt - source confidential- to assist in staying warm) to win his category in what was a tough day of racing for all athletes. By the looks of the weather and conditions a finish was a victory itself, however to pull of a "W" was an outstanding achievement in what looks like could a be a successful season for both riders.

What made this performance even more impressive, was Rod, who also races at Footscray Cycling Club, competed in the club championships the previous day and was very unlucky not to have 2 wins in 2 days. Unfortunately for Rod, who made a break with 20kms to go was caught with the final 200m in the sprint for the line to finish 5th in the 100k race.

Jason, who has had a solid start to his season, is looking to peak for the World Titles later in the year managed a very strong 12th in his category. By the condition of the bikes at the conclusion of the day, both boys will need lots of TLC to get the steads back to working order.

Another week of Great Results

Over the last week 4 athletes competed in various events around Victoria.

Travis & Archie competed in the Williamstown 1/2 Marathon, with both athletes recording very solid times so early in the season.

Travis completed the 21.1kms in 1hr 21min 17sec placing him 7th overall in the race. Archie ran a super 1hr 27mins 37sec to record 32nd overall and an outstanding 2nd in his age group.

Both athletes are starting preparation for their first Ironman attempt at Busselton in December.

Jason competed in a 5hour enduro over the same weekend and finished an outstanding 4th overall and also in his age group. This is just the start of the long haul that Jason has leading into the World 24hour Championships later in the year.

Rod started his first 6hr enduro on his brand new MTB and had the misfortune of destroying his rear wheel just under 2hours into his race. At the time he was leading his age group and was looking for a positive result. Only upwards from here for Rod.

Keep returning to see weekly updates from the team.

A Great Day had by MTR-Racing

4 of the MTR-Racing Athletes Teamed up for a duathlon at Lysterfield Park covering a 3.5k run, 20k off road MTB ride and then a 6k run.

Both teams were eagerly anticipating the outcome due to Benny & Rod confident of pushing the more fancied team of Jason & Xavier.

The day had chilly start to the morning, although by race time the weather was perfect for such a race. With over 100 starters and 12 teams entered, it was a quality field.

The first run over the 3.5k's including a steep hill climb, however this did not affect seasoned runners like Luke Whitmore (Another Team Degani Athlete) who covered the first run in 11.45mins to take the lead into T1. Ben was entered T1 in 13.20min closely followed by Xavier in 13.32mins.

So onto the bike, both Rod & Jason heading out of transition in close proximity, the race was going to be close.

Unfortunately for Rod, he had a minor fall which cost him some considerable time and was never able to bridge the gap to Jason or the other team riders heading back to transition.

Jason, took control of the MTB leg and closed the gap on the teams in front to head back into transition in 3rd overall and 1st team. His time was 53.07min (4th overall). He handed over a 30sec lead to Xavier for the final 6k run.

Rod, after recovering from his fall, managed a 59.14min ride and handed the reigns over to Ben.

So, onto the final 6km run, 5km which was flat and included a 1km climb. With Xavier being in 3rd position outright and only just in front of the 2nd placed team, the pressure was on to see if the run training was going to pay dividends.

By posting the 9th fastest run time of the day in 22.55min, Xavier held off all rivals to cross the line in 3rd outright and 1st Team.

Ben posted a very solid time on 23.25mins and only just finished off the podium by less than 25seconds.

Results can be found here: http://www.trixseries.com/ Under the results section

It was an outstanding effort by all involved and the team environment was very pleasing to see. Ben & Rod have already challenged Jason & Xavier to a re-match at the next race.

Well done to both Teams.

Stay tuned for more updates as a few of the Athletes are running the Williamstown 1/2 Marathon this weekend. We look forward to more good results.

Jason & Xavier collect the winners cheque.

Carla Lawson will be backing up from her race at Hawaii, both Ben Robinson and Xavier Coppock will be starting for the 3rd consecutive year and will both be looking for improvements from great races last year.

Archie Ball and Travis Atkins will both be making their Ironman debuts at the race and by the form showed in early season racing, should be there for a great showing.

A long winter ahead for all 7 athletes.

In short term news, 4 athletes will be competing in a Mountain Bike Duathlon at the weekend with Ben & Rod teaming up along with Jason & Xavier. Both teams will provide a good showing for the sponsor TEAM DEGANI and MTR-Racing are looking forward to some positive results.

Carla grabs slot for 2010 Ironman World Championships

Carla Lawson continues her great from over the Triathlon season to earn herself another crack at the Ironman World Champioships.

After having limited preparation, Carla managed 5th place in the 30-34 age group. Carla's highlight was her ride which set up her race and consolidated her position at the pointy end of the field.

Other MTR-racing athlete Xavier Coppock, who was also trying to gain a slot at Kona, did not have his ideal race, and managed to cross the line at the same time as Carla.

Stay tuned for race reports.
